Practical Uses For Vinegar: Part 1

Laundry RoomVinegar is an amazing product, and we’ve talked about the use of Apple Cider Vinegar on Super Human Radio numerous times. Over the next few weeks I will be posting practical uses not only for Apple Cider Vinegar but other vinegars as well.

Vinegar is not just limited to just cooking. It is one of nature’s most diverse and miraculous products capable of doing the jobs of hundreds of household substances without the chemical damage to the environment or our bodies.

Part 1 will explore the uses of distilled white vinegar (DWV) in the laundry.

LABEL REMOVER
Simply soak your label or sticker with DWV. Wait until the label is saturated then peel it off.

COLLARS & CUFFS
Make a thick paste of DWV and baking soda. Rub this onto the stains of your cuffs and collars prior to washing them in the usual way.

CUT DOWN LINT ON CLOTHING
Pour 5-9 fl. Oz. of DWV into the rinse cycle of your wash. You will notice while drying that your clothing has a reduction in lint.

PREVENTING COLORS FROM RUNNING
When washing a piece of clothing that the colors will bleed, simply pour 5 FL. OZ. of DWV into the washer during the fill cycle with cold water. Then add your soap and clothes. Wash as normal.

REMOVE TAR FROM JEANS
Pour a few drops of DWV onto the tar stains, place your jeans into the washing machine and wash as normal.

STAIN REMOVER
For stains caused by grass, coffee, tea, fruit, and berries, soak the stain in full strength DWV vinegar. Then wash as normal.

UNDER ARM MARKS & ODOR
If your clothing has residue under the arm left by deodorant or underarm odor simply saturate the area with DWV prior to laundering. Let sit for a few minutes and then launder as usual. This should remove the perspiration mark, deodorant mark and the smell.

FABRIC SOFTNER
Use DWV instead of store bought chemical laden fabric softener. Use as you would a liquid fabric softener.

REMOVE STIFFNESS FROM NEW JEANS
Turn new jeans inside out. Add 1 ¼ cup of DWV to your wash. The new jean stiffness should be gone.

REMOVE WHITE HEM MARKS
Warm up your iron, dip a toothbrush into DWV diluted with water. Scrub the white hem mark with the toothbrush and press with the warm iron. The mark should come right out, if not repeat the process.

PREVENT FADING OF COLORED TOWELS
Simply add 5 FL. OZ. of DWV to the water while laundering colored towels to prevent color fading.

CLEANING THE BASE OF YOUR IRON
Simply make a thick paste of baking soda and DWV. Wipe the sole plate of your iron with the paste and then wipe clean. The iron surface should be smooth, clean and shiny and will not harm any surface.

CLEANING AND REFRESHING AN IRONING BOARD
Spritz the ironing board cover with DWV and then iron the cover while it is still damp.

SHINY MARKS CAUSED BY THE IRON
Mix half vinegar and half water into a spritzer bottle. Use this spray to help remove iron made creases or shiny areas in the fabric.

REMOVING OR MAKING CREASES
Soak a cloth in a solution of 1 part DWV to 2 parts water. This is a strong smelling solution so use in a well-ventilated room. Simply iron the area with this cloth. The smell will soon leave the cloth.

REMOVE THE SMELL OF SMOKE FROM CLOTHING
Add 1 ¼ cup of DWV to a bath of hot water. Hang the clothing above the steam. Leave them in the bathroom overnight with a window open if possible.

SOFT FLUFFY BLANKETS
Add 2 ½ cups of DWV to a tub of water. Soak both cotton or wool blankets in tub. This will leave them free of soaps as well as soft and fluffy as new.

Next time we will explore the uses of Vinegar as a cleaning solution.
