Will Microwaved Water Kill These Plants?

Plants Day ZeroDuring the show I did with William Thomas about the negative effects of your microwave oven it was discussed that simply microwaving water - which is probably how most people use their microwave oven - to reheat beverages - changes the water so dramatically that if you water a plant with water that had been previously microwaved, over a short time the plant would wilt and die.

Some individuals emailed me and also posted comments in the show comments section saying this was ridiculous. I figured I'd find out for myself.

I went to Walmart yesterday and purchased two Bell Pepper plants. I chose these for two reasons. They were robust looking plants and they were tall-standing plants. It would be easy to see if one began to wilt and die. I took them home and watered them and allowed them to sit over night so they could acclimate after the drive home.

I opened a brand new gallon jug of Kroger's Spring Water, poured some off into a Pyrex bowl and microwaved it till it began to boil. Then I allowed to to sit till it cooled to room temperature. I then poured this back into an empty gallon jug and marked it with the letter "A". Each plant also has a letter indicator - "A" and "B". The un-microwaved water remains in its original jug and is marked "B".

These plants require a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight each day as indicated by the growing instructions that they came with so I've moved the plants to a table in my back yard. I will continue to water them both with un-microwaved water for the rest of today and begin the experiment tomorrow.

I will do daily updates with pictures so we can all see what happens. If you have any suggestions about this experiment please post them in the comments section here.
