It's Apple Picking Season

Raw applesauce is so much more delicious (and nutritious) than the cooked kind. Easy and quick too. Tastes very fresh and sweet and is remarkably "saucy" like cooked applesauce.

This is wonderful plain, with no added sweetener. But I think it would also be good with a sprinkle of evaporated cane juice, cinnamon, Stevia or a drizzle of honey. You could also add chunks of other fresh fruits, or add other fruits (pears would be wonderful) as you are making the sauce.

I think kids would love this!

 

2 medium-sized Organic apples (any variety, or a blend) makes about 1 cup

(I used Granny Smith Green Apples)

 

  1. Peel and core the apples.  (If you plan on making this recipe often apple corer & peelers are available.)
  2. Cut each half into eight pieces and put them all in the food processor with the chopping blade.
  3. Process until smooth--one or two minutes. You may need to stop the machine and scrape down the sides several times to get all the bits incorporated.
  4. Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator in an air-tight container. (I used ball jars to store mine.)
  5. You may need to add just a bit of filtered water.
  6. Add Cinnamon to taste.  (Don’t forget that Cinnamon has Insulin mimicking properties and will mitigate the effects of the sugar.)

 

 Buy in Season
Modern refrigeration has caused one unintended and unfortunate consequence, that being that the average urban consumer has lost a sense of season. Everything looks good on the shelf, everything is available at any time in any area, and it is easy to forget that fruit is seasonal and is actually being grown somewhere. All fruit has an optimum season when flavor, freshness and nutritional value are at their peak.

 

Buy Locally
Shipping and storage both can have adverse effects on fruit quality, even under the best of circumstances. Every region has its own distinctive varieties, and a visit to the orchard will help you discover which ones are best in your area. When you buy local produce there are many benefits. Local growers are a great source for suggestions, recipes and harvest information. Supporting local growers helps preserve family farms. Strong local agriculture is a check on sprawl. Buying locally is the best way to be sure you are putting the most nutritious food on your table. Buying fruit at the orchard is a lot more fun than pushing a shopping cart.

 

Keep Apples Cool

Apples continue to ripen after they have been picked. Keeping them cool retards this process. Never leave apples out at room temperature. Nothing can ruin an apple's flavor more than letting it sit out at room temperature.

 

Please don’t forget that APPLES are number ONE on the Environmental Working Groups WORST list.  Ninety-eight percent of all conventionally grown APPLES had pesticides.  Remember to buy ORGANIC!!!
