COMMENTARY: I talk a lot about the importance of sex in health and longevity. Here’s another reason to be having more sex. Men feel they’re happier with the quality of their lives when they’re having more sex. If you’re making your man beg for it, you’re creating a grumpy man.  If you want your man to do more around the house, have more sex with him. Men are easy. The way to a man’s heart isn’t through his stomach… it’s just a little lower. The study says so! The sexual activity gives both sexes a boost, but intercourse is more important for older men. Fertility is a big issue today. Environmental insults cause lots of problems with the entire reproductive system. Men suffer from oxidative damage to testes that alters spermatogenesis as well as testosterone production. In this study linked below, ginger (Zingiber officinale) has been shown to protect our little buddies from a significant oxidative assault. We use lots of ginger in our home. As a spice, tea, in salad dressings, Kombucha and protein shakes (don't laugh it tastes good). . As the study points out ginger is also a mild androgen receptor activator. I’m not totally sure how I feel about this though. What I’ve learned about phytoestrogens that’s probably true of phytoandrogens is that they selectively activate parts of the receptor mosaic while not having any effect on others. Is Exercise Really Medicine? An Evolutionary Perspective Daniel Lieberman from the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University recently published an editorial in Current Sports Medicine Reports asking several questions: Why do so many people fail to act in their own best self-interest, at least in terms of promoting good health? Why is exercise actually necessary for health? And what explains the exercise paradox: most people avoid exercise even though physical activity is vital for health? To answer these questions, Lieberman adopts an evolutionary perspective, asking first what types of exercise humans are adapted for and then why exercise may be considered medicine. Obviously all animals are adapted for some type of physical activity, but humans are unique among the primates in that we evolved to run; we became bipedal, started sweating, and developed big butts. What Kind of Cake Will You Choose for Your 100th Birthday?

I said something in jest yesterday at the gym that made me take pause and think about how true it really is. I was talking to my good friend and fellow radio and TV personality Tony Vanetti and said to him that I hoped I would be there when he blows out the candles on his 100th year birthday cake because that would mean I would be 117.

I thought about this the rest of the day. We all know that surrounding ourselves with likeminded people when you have a goal is critical to success. And we also know that once someone believes they can do something they usually can do it. And we usually believe we can do something once someone else has done it. Look at how world records are broken! This is the human phenomenon of raising the bar.
